In 1899, black American inventor George Cook of Louisville, Kentucky, received a U.S. patent for an "Automatic Fishing Device" (No. 625,829). The device featured a trip lever activated by tension on the fishing line. This would release a spring-loaded carriage that slid back on short rails within the frame of the device immediately and also would also ring an alarm-gong by releasing a spring-actuated striker. The carriage contained a spring-driven reel which then takes up the line.

DeleteWhere? I have been unable to locate any credible sources on this particular inventor. One source I found, https://prezi.com/lzy7ixiouglh/black-history-month-george-cook/ that one right there, was so appallingly unprofessional, I felt pure pity for myself and the 22 individuals who were forced to use that site because of the startling lack of information on this individual. Everything about that page, from the formatting and word choice, to the horrendously apparent typing mistakes, makes it clear to me that the author of the text only received their "licence to post" out of pure ignorance on the behalf of the individual that bestowed them with such a licence. It is also clear that you also speak from a place of ignorance if this is your reply to an apparent problem, that, or you are familiar with techniques of research superior to my own. Please, bestow your wisdom on the less fortunate, or kindly take your false opinions and get out.
