Over the course of the past 150 years there have been a number of notable African-American inventors, and among them is Alice H. Parker. Without her early invention, central heating systems would not exist. Parker is considered to be one of the top well-educated women of her time. Not only was it unusual for African-Americans to attend college at the turn of the 20th century, it was even more unusual for women to do so. However, she was an honored graduate of Howard University, a college dedicated to providing higher education to African-Americans since its founding in 1866.
